My review of Kenan Orhan’s impressive debut collection of stories, I Am My Country and other stories has been published by Bosphorus Review of Books. It is my second published review. BROB has published several of my stories over the past few years, the first one having been “The Fern That Fell”. For lovers of fine literature and those who love Turkey, Kenan Orhan’s short story collection is highly recommended.

The Memory Box (The Serulian Journal)

Publishing News! Over 10 years ago when I lived in Izmir I decided to try my hand at writing the text for a picture book. I completed the manuscript and then set it aside. This year I sent it to publishers and it has been accepted by Pegasus Publishers (Cambridge UK) and is slated for publication in 2024. This book is dedicated to my long-time and treasured friends in Canada, Dan & Michael, and their two cherished puppies, Walli & Magoo, who are now in Puppy Heaven but will never be forgotten.  A publisher’s synopsis is below.

The First Adventures of Walli and Magoo (A Tall Tail, Long Read Picture Book)

In this humorous story, Walli is a Dandy Dinmont Terrier and Magoo is a Dachshund who had been adopted by loving parents. When their two fathers leave to go to Palm Springs, Walli, and Magoo are left at home in the care of their aunt and uncle. The puppies are concerned as to the reason for the trip and when their parents will return, and thus consult with their friends for advice: Minnie the Chihuahua, Rex the German Shepherd, Caesar the Black Labrador Retriever, and Fifi the French Poodle. They receive mixed messages and one of their buddies tells them that people go to Palm Springs to get a divorce. This misunderstanding is the impetus for Walli and Magoo to leave home in search of their parents, which leads to a series of adventures when they become lost in The Big Woods near their home. Other characters include Mr. Chipmunk, Mr. Stinky (a skunk), Miss Prickly (a porcupine), and Auntie Bellum (an owl – she’s a real hoot!). This story is of special interest due to the puppies having two loving fathers, indicating that families can be diverse and yet not different in terms of the importance of familial relationships.
